Newspapers do a good job telling me what happened yesterday, but they’d be a lot more impressive if they could tell me what’s going to happen tomorrow. ~ Fuzzy Zoeller
I’m sitting here, trying to think up a good introduction to this post, when I realize there is no good one. Today’s news is depressing. If it’s not sheep cruelty, then it’s 9 Palestinian youths killed while watching the World Cup. There’s also a measles outbreak in Washington, due to unvaccinated children and so on. Just open up your local newspaper or news website to see.
And last, but not least, the stupid news: people thinking Steven Spielberg killed a real dinosaur, politicians stating that sodomy is causing AIDS due to a “sperm enzyme”, the Selective Service reminding 14,000 centenarians to register for the draft, blah blah blah.
We relish news of our heroes, forgetting that we are extraordinary to somebody too.
I try to find good and uplifting news, both locally and nationally. The only good news I can find in WRAL is an upcoming Super Moon, someone winning a $2 million Powerball prize, and a milk deal at the local Harris Teeter.
Believe me, I tried to find good news locally. But, as we all know, bad news sells.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to rant about that. Maybe.
I use Pocket to store all my news articles, advice columns, etc. I’ll see a link on Twitter or Facebook that I want to read, add it to Pocket and read it later (usually at work…). A good portion of the articles I’ve saved are from MentalFloss.com.
Some of my recent reads:
- 11 Ways Big Cats Are Just Like Domestic Cats (did you know big cats make kitty biscuits?)
- 11 Classy Insults With Classical Greek and Latin Roots (try fitting ructabunde into your daily conversation, I dare you)
- 5 People Who Were at the Wrong Place, at the Wrong Time—Multiple Times (I don’t think I’d ever leave home if I were them)
- The Amazing Fact Generator (margarine used to be dyed pink!)
Then again, my Pocket has some strange articles, such as talking about the sex lives of humanitarians, people thinking their dogs are smarter than they really are (Stormy IS smart!), and a Venezuela airport charging for the privilege of breathing clean air.
I don’t think this post has a point, except to share a bunch of links. I might make that a regular thing.
Here’s a picture of my newest cube acquisition. I haven’t named him yet, any suggestions?
