I love planning parties, going over decorations, planning menus, coming up with guest lists, you name it. I will create list after list after list, revising it over and over again, until it’s party time. Excitement! Party time!
Then…reality sets in. Two days to clean, cook and get ready?!? But what if I don’t have enough food? What if I have too much food? What if a tornado comes and destroys the house right before the party? What if everyone gets lost on their way here and end up in Jamaica*?
*the country, not the city in New York
Yes, I overthink things juuuust a bit.
Colby & I hosted a party this past Saturday, invited all sorts of odd people, including IT nerds, cupcake nerds and general nerds. I think I went a little overboard on the food, but it seemed to be a big hit with people.
I think we visited every grocery store in the area, trying to find new and interesting foods to serve, such as double cream Brie, fontina, salami, etc. Even after 4 trips to the grocery store, we still ended up having to run out again right before the party started. Oy.
Some items seemed to be a big hit, such as Purple Stuff, hummus, meats, cheeses, veggies, and strange BBQ weenies. Other stuff, not so much (red pepper spread, orange marmalade, avocado dip). The margaritas were a hit, of course. Thaaaank you, Trader Joe’s.
I tried a bunch of new recipes, but I think my favorite one was rainbow sticks with a vanilla-honey yogurt dip. I’d seen rainbow fruit sticks before on the intertubez, and it seemed simple enough. Fruit! Colors! POINTY THINGS!
Our sticks/skewers ended up with strawberries, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, blueberries, blackberries and grapes. Yes, I did forget a color. I somehow lost my pineapples… Is that the same as losing your marbles? Because I swear I lost mine this weekend.
I found an awesome fruit dip to go with the skewers, it’s pretty close to liquid crack.
